Kinder Morgan Approval Corrupted by BC Liberals

News Release

Lawsuit says Kinder Morgan Pipeline Approval Appears Corrupted by Payments of $550,000 to Liberal Party of BC

Kinder Morgan and the oil companies who plan to ship bitumen through the proposed Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain Pipeline (TMX) donated more than $550,000 to the B.C. Liberals in the past five years, putting Premier Clark and her Cabinet in a conflict of interest that prohibited them from making pipeline decision

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Tuesday, January 31, 2017

OTTAWA - Today, Democracy Watch and the PIPE UP Network applied to the B.C. Supreme Court for an order quashing Kinder Morgan's TMX pipeline approval on the basis that more than $550,000 in donations to the Liberal Party of BC by Kinder Morgan and TMX shippers donated to the B.C. Liberals created an apparent conflict of interest that prohibited Premier Clark, Minister Polak (Environment) and Minister Coleman (Natural Gas Development) from deciding whether to approve the pipeline.

Democracy Watch and PIPE UP’s contend that Premier Clark benefited personally and was in a conflict of interest when attending the events because she receives some of the money raised in the form of a $50,000.00 salary from the B.C. Liberal Party, totaling more than $300,000 paid to the Premier during the period that the Kinder Morgan and TMX shipper donations of $550,000 were collected by the Liberal Party.

"The fact that the Premier last week stopped receiving her $50,000 per year salary does nothing to erase the conflicts of interest and appearance of bias created by her receipt of more than $300,000 from the Liberal Party of BC during the period that Kinder Morgan and the TMX shippers donated more than $550,000 to the Liberal Party of Canada", said Duff Conacher, co-founder of Democracy Watch.

Lynn Perrin, a Director of the PIPE UP Network, stated "The fate of the Trans Mountain pipeline, which puts our oceans and rivers at extreme risk, should be decided by people who do not have their hands in the pockets of Kinder Morgan and the TMX shippers".
